How a Martingale Dog Collar Works

A classic dog martingale collar is made of nylon, leather, or other material, and has a loop and d-ring. Some have a metal chain where the loop would be, making the collar sturdier in general and specifically better suited for training. The martingale collar’s two loops enable you to keep your dog from wriggling out, while its flat strap circles your dog’s neck, and a loop with a ring completes the strap. You attach the leash to the ring and gain control over your dog. Tug lightly to tighten the loop.

These collars provide more control than a regular collar and prevent your dog from getting free and off leash. In addition, although they look like a flat collar, the d-ring, or chain if you choose, takes up what would make the entire length of the material. Some small loops are also made of fabric. The collar constricts when the dog pulls, causing the smaller of the loops to also constrict, then tightening the larger loop (but not enough to choke). Better yet, since these collars are adjustable, you are able to control the snugness and keep it at a safe and comfortable width.
