Choosing The Best Shock Collar for German Shepherds

Here’re a few things that you may want to look for when selecting a shock collar for your GSD:

Intended use

The types of shock collars that you buy should correspond to its intended use. Do you need a training collar, anti-bark collar, or boundary shock collar?

Range

Different shock collars have different maximum effective range. It depends on the area where you are going to train your GSD.

For home training or if you’re only going to use it in your neighborhood, shock collars at a range of 330 yards are good enough.

However if you have a big yard, or if you want to train your dog outdoor, for example at a hilly terrain, you’ll need a device with a longer range.

Multiple Modes

All the shock collars in the reviews above have 3 to 4 signaling modes. These can include shock, vibration, tone, and light. Having multiple options is a good thing since you don’t know which one that your dog will respond well too.

Therefore, you want to begin with less threatening signaling modes. Start with light or tone modes, then if your dog doesn’t respond well, apply the vibration mode. If your dog still doesn’t comply, use the shock mode as a last resort.
