Important Features of Dog Bark Collar

  • Correction methods. This is one area where you may see some controversy. There are four correction methods—sound, vibration, shock, and spray. Auditory beeps act as a distraction that causes dogs to stop and listen. However, some dogs can easily ignore a sound even when the volume is at its highest level. Vibration, on the other hand, is harder to ignore. Vibration takes the dog’s attention away from the cause of the barking and back on you as you offer correction and a reward when the barking stops. No-shock collars only have sound and vibration correction. However, they may not be enough for some dogs. Other models offer sound, vibration, and shock correction modes. Some models give you the option of a sound and vibration only setting while others always incorporate all three methods. It’s always recommended to use the lowest setting necessary, whether you’re using sound, vibration, or shock, to achieve correction. Spray collars have a reservoir that delivers a spray of citronella. Dogs hate citronella, so it works as a deterrent that doesn’t require sound, vibration, or shock.
  • Automatic/progressive correction settings. Models with automatic correction settings often start with an audible beep before delivering another more intense correction a few seconds later. Subsequent corrections are then delivered at a higher intensity. As a safety precaution, the collar ceases any correction after 60 to 90 seconds even if the barking continues. Some models start with a beep, progress to vibration then to a shock. This type of progressive correction gives the dog a chance to respond to the collar and correct behavior even when you aren’t around. This is a highly specialized feature that isn’t found on every collar. However, it’s worth considering if you want to leave a bark control collar on your dog while you’re at work or gone for long periods of time. That should only be done after you’ve spent some time training your dog with the collar first.
